Disney Dinner & A Movie Night: Monster’s University

Have you watched the new show on Disney+, Monsters At Work? Recently it has become one of our favorite shows to watch as a family. Knowing that Brooklyn already loves the monsters from Monsters Inc. and Monsters At Work, this week decided to show her the movie Monsters University.

Monsters University is the prequel to Monsters Inc and tells the story of how our two favorite monsters, Mike and Sully, met each other. When Mike is a kid, all he wants to do is become a Scarer, and he is so excited when he can attend Monsters University to learn how to be one. After starting off school on the wrong foot, he eventually joins a fraternity, Oozma Kappa, where he becomes frenemies of Sully. Mike and Sully, along with the rest of their fraternity, have to learn to work together so that they don’t get kicked out of the MU Scarer Program.

Whenever we have a Disney Dinner & A Movie Night, I like to decorate our house. Unfortunately, this movie night was a last-minute idea, and I didn’t have many options for decorations. Everything either took way too long to get to me or cost more money than I wanted to spend. I ended up ordering a Monsters University hat, a blue foam finger, and blue pom-poms from Amazon. Then, I decided to make some fraternity flags from the movie using my Silhouette Machine. It took me about 15 minutes to make these flags, and they added the perfect bit of decor to our night (and something I didn’t mind throwing away).

I wanted to cook something inspired by cafeteria food or things you might find on a college campus for our dinner. I also wanted our meal to be something that I could throw together quickly and that a 2-year-old would actually eat. And with all of those ideas in mind, I landed on nachos. Monster Nachos, to be exact. I put out tortilla chips, refried beans, shredded cheese, nacho cheese, jalapeños, sour cream, and guacamole, and everyone created a delicious nacho creation.

I also made a fun drink to go with our meal, the “Oozma Kappa” inspired by Mike and Sully’s fraternity. The fraternity colors are green and yellow, so I created a fun green drink by mixing an entire package of Kool-Aid Lemon Lime with a bottle of Simply Lemonade. I served the drink in a mason jar with yellow straw; it was delicious.

There is a moment in the movie where one of the monsters, Randall, makes cupcakes to try to make friends. I decided to replicate the cupcakes for our meal. I simply used confetti cupcake mix, vanilla frosting, and red icing to write “BE MY PAL.” I think Brooklyn liked the cupcakes the most, she ended up eating at least 3 or 4, haha.

Our Monsters University movie night was a hit with the whole family and most importantly Brooklyn who hasn’t taken off her new Monsters University hat. She loved watching the movie, eating cupcakes, and cheering “WE’RE NUMBER ONE!” with her blue foam finger.

Sending love and magic.
